There's no such thing as Child Porn

Our campaign for clarity

We believe it's vital to develop a broader understanding of the issues related to indecent pictures of children.

About 'Pornography'
We'd like to spell out our stance on 'pornography', however it's difficult to do this without appearing to be 'prudish'.  We fully accept that pornography is for many decent people, a normal part of their life.  By 'pornography' we mean legally available commercial material of an explicit adult nature.

We don't like to make any judgements about this quite legal behaviour.  We may personally not like it, but it is not our concern.

About consent
Before looking any further we'd like to start looking at the concept of 'consent'.
Having established the nature of 'pornography' we must associate this with the process of consent.  Therefore we must focus on the construction of 'pornography' - in a legal and commercial sense, as being contractual process amongst consenting adults.

About Child Abuse
Children cannot give consent.
Any indecent images depicting children are quite simply images of children being abused.
Such images are nothing to do with sex or erotica, they're to do with an abuse of power over a child by an abusive and manipulating adult.

Why is this important?
Using the term 'child porn', or worse, 'kiddie porn' trivialises the issue of organised, sometimes commercial, child abuse.  The terms ally the behaviour with consensual activity and reduce the psychological aspect associated with the damaging acts of abuse toward children.

What can you do?
Simple, don't use the term 'child porn'.
Try to change your terminology, if you are talking about such images, refer to them as images of child abuse.  This is important for all of us, especially so for journalists as you are in a position to influence common thought.

By changing our use of terminology we change the focus
